When an idea moves from a college laboratory to a multi-million dollar business, it’s a big deal. That is exactly what is happening with Solidec, a Houston-based startup that began in the research lab of Associate Professor Haotian Wang at Rice University.

Since spinning out of the lab in 2024, the company has hit the ground running. Solidec recently announced two major milestones: closing a $2 million pre-seed funding round and being named the Green Materials Solution of the Year by the CleanTech Breakthrough Awards. Selected from thousands of global entries, this prestigious honor cements Solidec’s status as a leader in climate technology.

Traditional chemical manufacturing is usually “heavy”, requiring massive factories and a fleet of trucks to ship products long distances. This process is expensive, hard on the environment, and vulnerable to supply chain delays.

Solidec is changing the game with modular manufacturing. Think of it as “chemistry in a box.” Instead of a giant factory, Solidec uses compact reactors that can be placed right where the chemicals are needed. Even more impressive? They only need three simple ingredients to work: air, water, and electricity.

This onsite approach creates three major wins:

  • Cuts Costs: Eliminates expensive shipping and long-haul logistics.
  • Saves Energy: A much greener alternative to traditional production.
  • Fixes Supply Chains: Companies make exactly what they need, when they need it.

The investment world is taking notice. Led by New Climate Ventures, a group of strategic investors is backing Solidec to help scale its technology.

The company’s impact is already reaching a global stage through a new pilot project in Australia. By helping produce materials used in high-tech electronics onsite, Solidec is proving that its “made-where-needed” model is ready for the world market.

Solidec is a perfect example of what the NSF I-Corps Southwest Hub is all about. By taking complex research from a Hub partner like Rice University and turning it into an award-winning, fundable business, Solidec shows how the next generation of innovators can solve our world’s toughest environmental problems.

Now a member of the Greentown Labs community in Houston, Solidec is scaling up to prove that the future of manufacturing is local, green, and incredibly smart.
